It might seem strange to have a section describing a stairwell but this is special. Under the carpets, which were only fitted in 2009, are stairs that are made out of slate slabs. These were covered over for safety.
At the same time a new chimney was built exactly as it would have been hundreds of years ago and the stairwell was sandblasted. When the plaster was taken off the walls the ceiling plaster was removed and the huge stone slabs, used as the base for the chimney, that had been hidden were revealed in all their beauty.
The walls and ceiling have now been pointed using lime mortar and the result in the wonderful different hues of the welsh stone. It is estimated the ceiling slabs weigh approximately two tons each! It is difficult to imagine how these heavy objects were lifted hundreds of years ago.
